Old Mercedes like this 1970 W144 250CE are superbly well-built, massively over-engineered, and effortlessly cool.

With only 6 owners from new, this very rare UK-supplied RHD Mercedes 250CE has been owned by its last keeper since 2000, garaged throughout and using the car almost daily until ill health forced its sale

First registered on 18th December 1970, this particular car marks a slight departure from the cars we typically sell at AutoVero Ltd, but presents a unique and interesting proposition for the potential new owner.

UK-supplied RHD W114 Coupes are an absolute rarity. When we found it we were astounded by the originality and solidity of the car, not to mention the extensive folder of history that compliments it, which also includes 30 old tax discs. This historical documentation also supports the recorded mileage of a mere 97,000 miles.

Taking it under our wing in the workshop and it was immediately apparent that the car was structurally superb, with no signs of welding whatsoever, and all of the areas prone to rust being totally solid. The underneath is truly a sight to behold on a car that is 52 years old - so much so, we doubt you’d be able to find a more solid and original example.

While in our care, the car has been given a thorough inspection and any mechanical works required have been attended to, totalling over £2,000 of costs. These works included a full service, plugs, oil filter, engine oil, gearbox fluid change, new fuel pipes front to back, new injector seals, injector service and clean, new fuel pressure regulator, HT leads, distributor cap and rotary arm, and 2 rear shock absorbers.

Now with a new 12-month MOT and no advisories, the result is a car which you can enjoy as is, enjoy as a rolling restoration, or is prime for an easy restoration where only the cosmetics need to be attended to.

Most certainly, this car will give the new owner an opportunity to easily increase its value and make an easy profit. The first step in our mind, would be to embark on a serious deep clean and detail.

    CONDITION

This is a remarkably well-preserved and straight example; with ripple-free flanks and good shutlines, unmolested and with everything present that should be.

The chromework is good with some pitting in places, but looks wonderful thanks to the huge chrome radiator grille, double-decker front bumper, and vertical headlamps.

The paintwork carries a patina commensurate with a very well looked-after, unrestored car now entering its sixth decade. There is some slight bubbling to the front N/S wing, but this rust is clearly still in its infancy and looks to be restricted in its spread and would be easy to halt.

On the inside, the grey leather interior is patinated, but all the better for it. The often problematic woodwork is superb. The driver’s door needs to have the door pocket re-attached but is present with the car.

The seats look to be in a very good condition and are still firm and supportive.

    The twin-spindle radio is period-correct.

The switches are in full working order, as are the gauges.

The headlining is taut and free of damage.

The carpets have seen better days - an easy and cost-effective fix (£280.00) that would transform the interior.

The engine bay presents well, but again, there is room for improvement with very little effort.

    ON THE ROAD

The car starts first time, runs smoothly as Mercedes intended and changes gear exactly as it should.

With plenty of power, the car is pleasure to drive and gets positive attention wherever it goes.

The steering is surprisingly positive for a car from the 70s, however let’s not forget how advanced Mercedes was at this time.

The suspension is compliant with a luxurious feel.

The brakes are responsive and brake straight and true.
